    Bizarre que personne ne discute jamais des paroles de la Marseillaise, autrement plus violentes que celles-ci ou du Deutschland über alles, ou des paroles grandiloquentes de l’hymne italien, tous textes liés à des événements exceptionnels pour une communauté. Il semble qu’il y a toujours des nostalgiques de la période 1815-1830.

    Honestly, I never liked Pertile. His voice, especially when attacking high notes resembled more like a screaming than singing. The fact that he was a Toscanini favorite is meaningless. Gigli, Martinelli and Lauri Volpi were the greatest Italian tenors between WWI and WWII.

    What Régine crespin proposes here is original : not the dramatic, expressionist display we're used to, but somethong a lot more introspective, the portrait of a very young woman who can't bear more suffering and contemplates death as the only issue. I personnaly find it beautiful and deeply moving.

      @@jimdrake-writer. Everybody has own taste. You cannot do anything about that. I see you here with another one who I do not like very much, Pavarotti. His sweet canary bird voice makes me sick. The same story with bocelli.

    • @jimdrake-writer
      @jimdrake-writer Місяць тому

      Pavarotti wrote the forewords to two of my opera biographies (my first Ponselle in 1982, and my bio of Richard Tucker in 1984), and I knew him quite well. In a discussion I taped with him in Philadelphia after one of his concerts, he told me that the greatest voices had a timbre that he termed "amber." Two examples he gave were Ponselle and Caruso. Obviously, he never sang with Caruso and knew his voice only from recordings, but he did sing with Ponselle at her estate. She told him she wanted to hear him for herself, and accompanied him singing "Una furtiva lagrima." He said he was so nervous being in her presence that he had to re-start the aria three times. Ponselle told him that his voice was somewhat larger than she had thought. He replied that he wished he had an "amber" voice like hers, but that his was silver and not gold. Ponselle then sang a Neapolitan song, accompanying herself, and he was so taken by her singing at that age that he called record producer Terry McEwen, who urged her to name her price for a record of Neapolitan songs with Pavarotti. Her reply was that if the resulting recording was praised by reviewers, the assumption would be that it was engineered to make her sound like she did in the 1950s. And if it received negative reviews, the critics would say that she should have stayed retired and never agreed to a recording. "I don't leave this house," she told McEwen, "so I wouldn't have any part in publicity. Plus, to be blunt about it, I don't need the money!" About Pavarotti, most admirers divide his career into his early years, followed by his prime, and ending with his "Pavarotti and Friends" arena events, when the voice was a lengthening shadow of what it had been. Regarding your dislike of his or any other voice, you would do yourself a favor by studying Aesthetics. Opinions, yours or anyone's, are value judgments and as such must be justified by the person giving his/her opinion. The great American critic W. J. Henderson, who had heard and reviewed nearly every great singer from the late-1880s until his death in June 1937, underscored that intonation, diction, evenness of vibrato, and consistency of tone throughout a singer's range are matters of fact, not opinion.

    Both are good performers in this role, their phrasing is great. The main difference is the type of technique: Scotto learned a high-pitched voice technique without adequately working on the lower middle range of the voice (unfortunately typical of the most modern technique from the late 20th century to the present). Instead, Mrs. Caballe worked the highly refined belcanto technique basing her natural voice as the main objective (that's why her voice is angelic and beautiful) her full range of voice from the chest register through a decent medium range and some powerful treble thanks to her magnificent breathing capacity , an old technique that unfortunately is no longer taught in singing schools.
